The Australian Full Size war memorial
recognising their sacrifice
On the 1st of May, 1885, Private Robert Weir of the NSW Contingent was killed in the Sudan and became the first Australian to die in war. Since then, over 102,000 men and women have had their names entered onto the Roll of Honour.
The Full Size War Memorial is designed to give visitors an immersive experience that shows the vast scale of the sacrifice made by Australia’s service men and women.
By displaying figures representing all 102,846 personnel from the Roll of Honour, the public will see exactly how enormous that sacrifice has been.
Each figure will measure 2 metres in height and a diameter of 50 centimetres. They will be positioned in 9 sectors around a central eternal flame. The nine points of the sectors represent the first 9 Australians to die during the Sudan campaign. The rows behind each of them begin with those of the Boer War and continue outwards in chronological order through to Lance Corporal Todd Chidgey who was killed in Afghanistan on July 1, 2014.

The centre of the circle contains the Eternal Flame and the single points on each of the nine sectors represents one of the nine Australians who gave their life for the Sudan Campaign.
Each of the nine avenues leads to the Eternal Flame but it should be noted that while looking down any avenue, the other side of the circle can not be seen. You must travel through the Memorial to get to the other side.
The diameter of the Full Size War Memorial is estimated at 850 metres with a total land requirement of at least 100 hectares.
