Sweatshops

14/2/2001

Currently, the "rag trade" supports its profits through the use of "sweatshops" where workers receive a pittance as they're not covered by any awards as they are forced to be small businesses.

Would it not make sense for someone to organise a co-op of these "piece workers" and help return some of the profits to them?

No, I'm not advocating communism! Just remember that the majority of piece workers are migrant women who, more than likely, have little understanding of English let alone the intricacies of Australian corporations laws. So, if you have such an understanding (as well as an understanding of the rag trade!), why not give them a hand and make both you and them some money!

The blog may cover all manner of subjects from business to politics to ideas that just sound right.

Some of them are quite old but are here for your entertainment (!) nonetheless.
